Etsy product research: how to find what actually sells

Great Etsy shops aren’t built on guesses. They’re built on knowing what people are already buying — and making more of it, better. Here’s how to research products the smart way.

Why product research matters

The hardest part of selling on Etsy isn’t making things — it’s making the right things. You can pour hours into a beautiful product nobody’s searching for, or you can spend those same hours on something with real, proven demand. Product research is simply the work of telling those two apart before you commit.

The signals that reveal demand

You don’t need insider access to read demand on Etsy. The public signals are right there on every listing — you just have to read them together:

  • Estimated sales. The single most useful number. A listing quietly doing hundreds of sales a month is telling you the market is real.
  • Reviews and listing age. Lots of reviews in a young listing means fast, steady demand. The same reviews over many years means slower interest.
  • Favorites and price. Favorites hint at interest that hasn’t converted yet; price shows you where the market sits and where the gaps are.
  • The whole search page. Zoom out. Are a few shops taking all the sales, or is demand spread around? Spread-out demand usually means room for a newcomer.

A simple research routine

Before you make your next product, spend ten minutes like this:

  • Search the way a buyer would. Use the exact words a customer types, not the clever name you’d give it.
  • Open the top results and look at their estimated sales. Is there proven demand?
  • Study the winners. What do the best-selling listings have in common — photos, price, variations, keywords?
  • Find your angle. Look for the under-served version: a color, size, bundle, or style the top sellers are missing.
